The other night over in Brooklyn it was gratifying to see some great musicians finally get inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. And having the ceremony played out in front of a large crowd of regular folks totally made sense. Enough of the closed door banquet halls and tuxes. Congrats to my man Peter Gabriel (as a solo artist) as well as Linda Ronstadt, Hall and Oates, and Nirvana. Hey, even Kiss got in.
It was really about time for Yusuf Islam (Cat Stevens). Talk about falling through the cracks for a long time. But really, it was about getting tossed under the bus for all too many years.
My favorite category every year is what’s known as the Musical Excellence Award (formerly the Sidemen Award). It’s the recognition of all those great back-up bands and players who worked along with the stars on their way to the top. Folks like the Small Faces, the Miracles, and the Fabulous Flames. Well, this year Springsteen’s E-Street Band got the nod. Word is, it took an hour on stage to do all the introductions and presentations before they even hit a note. Very cool.
